Yes, LORD, I am listening...

Yes, LORD, I am listening...

Holy Spirit, help me hear and respond!

Younger Set

  • Ask, "What was the last thing that you heard God say to you?" (Children will likely not know, or feel confused, since they will be thinking of hearing a literal voice.) (If anyone does respond with a Bible verse or principle, affirm that child's understanding!)
  • Say, "There was a young boy that lived before and during the time of King David. He also had a hard time knowing when God was speaking to him." Read the event from 1 Samuel 3:1-10, or have one of the children tell it in their words, or if time allows,...use puppets or people to act out the story.
  • Ask, "Who helped Samuel know that God was talking to him?" (Eli, the priest). "Who helps YOU know that God is talking to you?" (parents, pastors and SS teachers, grandparents, godparents, etc.)
  • Ask, "How does God speak to you?" ( In His Word, the Bible)
  • Ask, "Do you know what God told Samuel when Samuel listened?" (This is beyond the scripture reading) "God was going to punish Eli because his sons had sinned, and Eli had not stopped them. Would that have been an easy thing to tell Eli?"
  • Ask, "Did Samuel tell Eli what God had said? Yes! When God tells us something He expects us to listen and obey. Why?" (Because He is our Creator, King, Father, and Savior. And we want to do it because we love and honor Him.)
  • Say, "Now can any of you think of something that God has said to you recently?" ( Adults help youth think of any Bible verses, such as 'Forgive one another as I have forgiven you', or 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind,' etc.)
  • Close with a simple prayer, "Lord, please speak to us in Your Word.  We are listening.  Please help us understand and obey.  Amen."
  • Points to Ponder - What are some strategies of world, flesh, and Satan that try to keep me from hearing God? What are 2 or 3 distractions currently in my life that hinder my quiet reflecting, discerning, and acting on what God is saying in His Word? Share a recent time when you heard God speaking to you. How can your Connection Group help each other grow in hearing God speak, and, help others recognize His voice?
