What’s the Big Deal about the Benediction?

What’s the Big Deal about the Benediction?

Blessed to be a blessing...

From the very beginning of human life, God blessed His people… Adam & Eve in Genesis 1, Abraham & his descendants in Genesis 12 and 22, the Israelites through Priest Aaron in Numbers 6, people in New Testament times through Jesus’s apostles and followers (2 Corinthians 13:14).

As Christ’s priests TODAY, God has given us the privilege and power to bless others. In these times of increasing twisted truths, social upheaval, and worldwide evil… our neighbors, coworkers, friends, family ALL NEED this gift!

What’s included in blessings we give in our Lord’s Name, such as the one recorded for us in Numbers 6?

• God’s power and authority

• God’s protection from Satan, world, and flesh

• God’s delight in us and desire to fellowship with us

• God’s promises for earthly and eternal hope

• God’s kindness and care from His great love

• God’s peace that passes all human understanding

• Lord’s Name to bear witness into our world

In this new year, let’s determine to be “People of Blessing”!

Wouldn’t it change our community if every time someone interacted in word or deed with a member of Emmanuel… that person was uplifted, encouraged and changed in mind or heart by a blessing? May it be so for God’s glory in Jesus’s Name, Amen.

Supporting Activities:

1. As an individual or as a Connection Group, go through the book and/or study, “The Blessing”, written by John Trent and Gary Smalley.

2. Practice blessing people – start with a spouse, a child, a sibling, a parent, a close friend – use one from Scripture or prayerfully design your own.

3. Choose partners in your Connection Group gathering. Prepare a blessing for your partner based on circumstances in his/her life. Write it down so the partner may take it home, but also speak the blessing in his/her presence.

Points to Ponder – When did someone share with you a blessing that was spoken into your life in such a way that you knew it was from the Lord? Who has received such a blessing from the Lord through you? What do God’s actions as listed in Numbers 6:22-27 mean to you personally? How can your CG help each other in this ministry of giving and receiving blessings?

READ Numbers 6:22-27 NIV

22  The LORD said to Moses, 23  "Tell Aaron and his sons, 'This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

24  "' "The LORD bless you and keep you; 25  the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26  the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace."' 27

"So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them."
