Signs of the Savior: The Sign of Sonship

Signs of the Savior: The Sign of Sonship

What thoughts and images come to mind when you hear... "father", "son", "daughter", "adopted"?

When the water changed to wine at Cana, the disciples' perception of Jesus matured quickly from son of Mary & Joseph to Son of God! Wouldn't you like someday to see a video of that moment?!  :)

The John passage makes me wonder - in MY mind and heart and life, do I perceive and worship Jesus as GOD? Do I submit to His Word, serve Him with zeal, and proclaim Him with boldness? Am I inviting Him to reveal His glory in and through my life and situations?

As surely as Joseph adopted Jesus to be his earthly son, you and I have been adopted by God to be His spiritual sons and daughters... brothers and sisters of our Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:12, Ephesians 1:5). Triune God, through Your Holy Spirit cause me to gratefully desire and receive ALL that you offer as my Heavenly Father, and to joyfully rely on the power and promises of my brother, Jesus Christ! For His sake, Amen.

Points to Ponder – How can you grow into a fuller realization and application of your identity as a Child of God? What steps can your Connection Group take to help brothers and sisters in Christ do the same? Make a list of gifts included in your spiritual inheritance as God’s son/daughter. Compare your list with those named in Ephesians, chapters 1-3.

READ John 2:1-11 NIV, Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b]

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
